For example, you may give permission to someone to use your car or to stay in your house. In the case of copyright, the owner holds the exclusive rights to copy, distribute and adapt an original creative work, including the economic rights associated with the work. Similarly, a copyright holder may give permissions regarding these rights. Creative Commons provides the legal tools that help authors manage their intellectual property rights and permissions associated with their creative works.<br style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"definitions\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeglobal.org\/lida103\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_define.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Definitions<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>Copyright\n<\/dt>\n<dd><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Copyright\">Copyright<\/a> is a legal right created by the law of a country that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution. However, in order to balance these exclusive rights for the public interest, there exist exceptions and limitations to copyright, such as fair dealing and fair use.\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Copyright owners\n<\/dt>\n<dd>Copyright owners have the exclusive statutory right to exercise control over copying and other exploitation of their works for a specific period of time, after which the work is said to enter the public domain.\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nThe copyright holder, as the legal owner of the rights associated with copyright can therefore give advance permissions regarding use of the work. This is enabled through the <a href=\"\/lida103\/learning-pathways\/copyright\/transfer-of-rights\" title=\"Learning in a digital age\/LiDA103\/Copyright\/Transfer\">transfer of rights<\/a> by applying a copyright license.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Refine_your_copyright\">Refine your copyright<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Creative Commons provides the creator with a spectrum of choices resulting in a &#8220;some rights reserved&#8221; approach through to &#8220;all rights reserved&#8221; copyright. Traditional &#8220;all rights reserved&#8221; copyright grants the creator exclusive rights to his or her work, which restricts others from copying, distributing and\/or adapting the work without permission.\n<\/p>\n<p>Think of Creative Commons as a tool which enables educators to create and share creative works based on a culture of giving permissions rather than a culture of imposing restrictions by default.\n<\/p>\n<p>As a rights holder of your own work, you have the freedom to choose the most open license which gives others the permissions to <b>copy<\/b>, <b>distribute<\/b> or <b>modify<\/b> your work as long as they credit you for your original work.
