The ownership of ideas is in part regulated by copyright. The system of copyright evolved in an era when the expenses needed to print, distribute and sell a book were significant. In a digital world where ideas can be distributed freely and duplicated at the press of a button, we are witnessing unprecedented opportunities to widen access to high quality educational resources for all learners of the world. Nonetheless, there is still much work to be done to realise the potential of digitally available curriculum materials for our national education systems.<\/p>\n<p><br style=\"clear:both;\">\n<\/p>\n<table class=\"cquote\" style=\"margin:auto; border-collapse: collapse; border: none; background-color: transparent; width: auto;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"20\" valign=\"top\" style=\"border:none; color:#B2B7F2;font-size:35px;font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: left; padding: 10px 10px;\"> \u201c\n<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" style=\"border: none; padding: 4px 10px;\"> <i>Today, the process for capitalizing &#8211; either financially or socially &#8211; on innovation and creativity is staggering under the strain of a digital revolution of a speed and scale never seen before. At a time when many of their most valuable assets can be shared and exchanged easily, businesses and governments [are] scrambling to redefine who owns what.<\/i>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"20\" valign=\"bottom\" style=\"border: none; color: #B2B7F2; font-size: 35px; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: bold; text-align: right; padding: 10px 10px;\"> \u201d\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\" class=\"cquotecite\" style=\"border: none; padding-right: 4%\">\n<p style=\"font-size: smaller; text-align: right;\"><cite style=\"font-style: normal;\">\u2014James Kanter, New York Times, 2005<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/cite><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\nThis sub-section on the ownership of ideas sets the context for our global mission to return to the core business of education, which is to share knowledge freely.\n<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Views_on_the_ownership_of_ideas_in_a_digital_world\">Views on the ownership of ideas in a digital world<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"preknowledge\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeglobal.org\/lida103\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_preknowledge.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Preknowledge<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The following information is relevant to understanding the context of the video activity which follows:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brothers_Grimm\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Brothers Grimm\">Brothers Grimm<\/a> were German academics who published collections of folk tales and fairy tales which became popular. The works of the Brothers Grimm are in the public domain and can be accessed from <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\">Project Gutenburg<\/a>. Some of the Grimms&#8217; stories were adapted and remixed as animated feature films by Walt Disney Animation Studios, including for example, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and The Princess and the Frog.\n<\/li>\n<li> In terms of general copyright, works automatically enter the public domain usually after the life of the author plus 50 years. The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Copyright Term Extension Act\">Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act<\/a> of 1998 effectively froze the advancement date of the public domain in the United States by  extending these terms to life of the author plus 70 years; and for works of corporate authorship to 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever endpoint is earlier.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"media\" src=\"https:\/\/course.oeglobal.org\/lida103\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_multimedia.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Who should own ideas?<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>This video reflection provides a historical record from the perspective of two leading activists in the free culture:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eben_Moglen\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Eben Moglen\">Eben Moglen<\/a>, Professor of Law and Legal History at Columbia University, and founder, Director-Counsel and Chairman of Software Freedom Law Center, speaking on ownership of ideas. <small>(Note that this video is licensed under a CC-BY-SA license and is incorporated into these materials under the original license out of respect for Eben Moglen&#8217;s leadership and work in promoting freedom. It would not be appropriate to request removal of the copyleft provision.)<\/small> <sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>, and\n<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_Lessig\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Lawrence Lessig\">Lawrence Lessig<\/a>, Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and founder of Creative Commons, speaking on the idea of openness  <sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Before watching the video, consider the following questions:<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Is it right to apply the word &#8220;theft&#8221; to reusing ideas to further learning?\n<\/li>\n<li> Who should own ideas?
